Simple & Inexpensive Fundraising Ideas for Smaller Nonprofits

Looking for a quick way to get your fundraising campaign up and running without spending a lot of money? Here are some inexpensive fundraising ideas to get you started:

  • Simply ask - sometimes the most direct route is the best. Letting people know there is a need can generate donations. Some individuals would much rather donate money to worthy causes then purchase trivial items they will never use.
  • Bake sale - make sure to have the bake sale in a populated area. This is an inexpensive way to generate donations and get the organization’s message out to the community.
  • Sell candy or provide cold drinks - buy in bulk and sell the candy/drinks at retail price in places where candy/drinks would not be available such as at the park, beach, etc. The items can include a wrapper to advertise the organization and get its message out to the community.
  • Market stalls - for a small setup fee, you get to promote your organization on a weekly basis within the community. The key is finding something you can make or acquire at a low price but will sell in a large enough volume for the organization to make money.
  • 50/50 raffle - sell raffle tickets to donors and split the money evenly with the winner. This is one of the cheapest ways to raise funds since the only cost to the organization is the purchase of the raffle tickets.
  • Walkathons - easy to organize and promotes health and fitness among the participants. The organization can find sponsors and/or ask participant’s to pay a fee.
  • Rummage/Garage sale - get donated items and have volunteers help with the sale. Typically, expenses can be limited to the cost of the venue and if the items are priced for sale, can generate significant funds.
  • One item that tends to increase expenses is getting the proper advertisement for any fundraising event. You can make the advertising cheaper by planning around other community events and asking the local radio stations and newspapers to donate their advertising space

Remember - you are only limited by your imagination when it comes to low cost fundraising ideas! Turn your annual spaghetti dinner into a pancake breakfast, or your bake sale into a cake walk for a twist to the everyday fundraiser.
